NEARLY £2,000 has been raised for charity at the annual Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Chairman’s Charity Ball.

Mike Worthington
More than 200 people packed into the Alton Towers Hotel on Friday for Councillor Mike Worthington’s bash to raise money for his chosen charities.
The event, which took place on Friday, featured a live band and Gobbie Williams — a Robbie Williams impersonator.
Councillor Worthington said he was delighted that so much was raised throughout the evening.
He told Your Leek Paper: “It was a brilliant event and I’m absolutely over the moon with the amount raised.
“The charity fund is now more than £10,000, more than double that of the previous chairman.
“The whole evening was buzzing and I’d like to thank everyone who came along to show their support including the High Sherriff, and a number of councillors from all parties.” The charity ball is one of a number of events held by Councillor Worthington, of Rownall Road, Wetley Rocks, to raise cash for neighbouring Horton Lodge Special School plus Weaver House and Homelink, both in Cheadle.
All three causes are dear to Councillor Worthington’s heart.
Horton lodge educated son Karl, a cerebral palsy sufferer, from the age of three until he was ready to enter a mainstream school.
Now aged 25, Karl has never forgotten the debt of gratitude that he and his family owe the school.
Homelink provides day care for Alzheimer’s sufferers including Councillor Worthington’s mother-in-law, who is among the vulnerable and elderly people benefiting from the community transport provided by Weaver House.
Councillor Worthington said: “Everybody gave so generously, which was what the whole evening was about — raising money for some great causes.” Future fund-raising events include a shooting day at Blackshaw Moor, which Mr Worthington hopes to organise in the near future.
Previous fund-raising events have included a sponsored skydive by his wife and daughter and a murder mystery evening at the Churnet Valley Railway.
