Here’s a nice piece of history for your readers — it is the 50th anniversary of the Spurs v Crewe Alexandra FA Cup match which took place on February 3, 1960.
So what, you might say. Well here goes.
In goal on that eventful day was none other than Leek’s own Dave Evans — yes, you’re right, the guy who ran the ‘chippy’ in Stockwell Street for years.
What’s so special about the match? Well read on .
‘Our Dave’ let in 13 goals for Crewe Alex, a Spurs record still to this day. The eventual score was Spurs 13, Crewe 2.
Spurs were 10-0 up at half time, as well as having two goals disallowed.
Spurs were 3-0 up after 11 minutes and that was made 6-0 after half-anhour.
After the match ‘Our Dave’ said he expected Spurs to score seven or eight and didn’t know where the other five came from. He didn’t feel good about it.
So you see our own Dave Evans of Leek as his name etched in Spurs’ and the FA Cup’s history.
