Impeccable safety record is cemented

A CEMENT works in the Moorlands is celebrating a safety milestone after achieving a year without a “lost time injury”.

LaFarge Cement’s Cauldon Works, which employs around 130 people, went through a whole year without an injury that prevented an employee or contractor returning to work the next day.

The Cauldon team’s achievement also makes a major contribution to an important company milestone — Lafarge Cement UK’s best ever safety record, with a reduction in UK-wide injuries of 70 per cent in 2009, in comparison with 2008.

Allan Ruxton, Cauldon Works manager, said reaching the milestone demonstrated the company’s commitment to safety.

He said: “The safety of everyone working on and visiting this site is our number one priority and I am proud that the team here — both employees and contractors — has kept its focus in a particularly challenging period.

“Every person has been committed to getting the job done both effectively and safely and this vigilance has paid off.

“Using risk assessment and safe working procedures to challenge the way we do things helps keep us all safe and avoid unnecessary risks.” The company has also welcomed a new health and safety co-ordinator, Vicky Allen.

Derby-based Vicky joins Lafarge from British Gypsum, where she held the role of safety and environment coordinator.
